Tomorrow is Friday

Well... it looks like it is going to happen! Tomorrow the show opens. Aside from some last minute touches of paint and cable dressing and stuff like that, Brian S and I have to review our cues tonight (actors have the night off to snuggle with loved one's they haven't spent time with this past week)...but it is done. Last night we had a bit of an impromptu press night. I've never done them before because our press in the past always came either opening weekend or the following weekend depending on how long the run was. So... I think from here on out... we are going to do press nights no matter what.

There are so many people and organizations I have to thank for helping us in both large and small ways bring this show to life. RBP, Greyzelda (Chris and Rebecca), Jesus Contreras, Brian Seitel, Nick Keenan, Tony Adams, Ron Kroll, the list goes on...

Right now, I am extremely thankful to the cast as well.

I hope that you'll come see DEVILS DON'T FORGET. There are plenty of photos online at http://chicagomammals.com as well as at facebook (just type DEVILS DON'T FORGET in the search).

Hope to see you there!

FavoriteThing(s)ThisWeek - Kafka by Mairowitz and Crumb

How are you feeling? Me, I am feeling quite Kafkaesque.

I woke up this morning in a panic having mistaken my eyelashes for a swarm
of insects. Once the sensation passed. I spilt a cup of hot tea onto my
feet. The big toe was scalded. I had no bandage or ointment. So I had to
sooth the digit in cold water and wrap it with fresh newsprint. The little
pink fellow has been punishing me all day, each wincing pain prick a
reminder that I am too clumsy and meriting of what ever burns I acquire.
It I were a better made man, I would have done something about my
clumsiness by now. I would have begun training in the martial arts, or
even if I didn't have the money for that create my own regiment of
balancing acts to perform in the privacy of my own home while watching the
television thereby taking steps to improve my equilibrium. I haven't done
so yet, and doubt that I ever will. Well, let the pink fellow howl in
anger. I deserve it.

I've been reading Kafka by David Zane Mairowitz and illustrated by Robert
Crumb. I am really loving it, and I am inspired especially by the
illustrations accompanying the stories. Crumb is making something akin to sequential art for a biography with illustrated stories by Kafka
included in the biographical narrative. Quite wonderful stuff. Pick this
one up if you get the chance

The Hawk Is Dying

You ask nothing when you're born; you ask nothing when you die. Everything in between is suffering. Because God works in mysterious ways. How beautiful it all was, he thought, if you could believe it. How terrifying it all was if you could not.

If you're going to be anything or know anything or do anything, you've got to be abnormal. Whatever's normal is a loss. Normal is for shit.

This is book that belongs on the shelf next to works like Dostoyeski's Notes From Underground, Hemingway's Old Man and the Sea.

I once referred to Crews as someone who could take Flannery O'Connor and grab her works by the throat. I didn't realize until I read The Hawk Is Dying that Crews is actually Franz Kafka for the American South.

This goes in my top five for most meaningful experiences as a reader. I guess it was the right book at the right time.

DEVILS DON'T FORGET meet the cast - Don Hall

What can be said about Don Hall that hasn't already been uttered through clenched teeth!? Don Hall is the Events Coordinator for Chicago Public Radio and the Audience Services cat for NPR’s prolific game show "Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me!"

Don is a producer, director, and writer of Chicago Off-Loop Theater and the Founding Director of Chicago's prolific WNEP Theater. Every now and again, Don can be seen performing on a Chicago stage or teaching advanced improvisational technique.

He is also an angry liberal and a dissatisfied artist.

Visit the blog - An Angry White Guy in Chicago (http://www.donhall.blogspot.com) - for daily updates about his skewed view of Chicago theater, the fetid world of politics and the planet in general. It isn’t pretty, so enter at your own risk.

He also happens to be one of the most villainous bad guys the Chicago Storefront Scene has ever spawned. Don plays UDO the heavy in DEVILS DONT FORGET. Come on out and hiss at him!

Check out some of Don's castmates

ATOM SMASHERS at the Side Project's CUT TO THE QUICK

I would like to brag on these actors pictured below. They are my cast for the short play TORTURE CHAMBER part of the CUT TO THE QUICK FESTIVAL put on by SIDE PROJECT

Pictured above is Brett Lee as Gault, Kipp Moorman as Biles, and Roxanne Saylor as Diedre.

The show has no small debt to the theatre of the absurd. I was very taken by the script and this cast has done a great job of putting together a fantastic performance.

I hope you'll consider seeing CUT TO THE QUICK, it is an evening of short plays that cover a wide spectrum of narrative. I'm proud not only of my cast, but everybody involved in the production! Go see it!

DEVILS DON'T FORGET meet the cast - Susan Myburgh

Susan Myburgh moved to Chicago in 2008 after graduating with a B.A. in Theatre from Florida State University. She is a company member of Tympanic Theatre, where she directed Gregor and the Squonk and Morality Play. Her short play The Elf King will be featured in their upcoming Fall festival of new work. As an actress, she has appeared in LEA: A Nightmare with Gorilla Tango, the Women’s Theatre Alliance showcase, and the upcoming Ride Down Mount Morgan with Redtwist.

Come see Susan play the ingenue aka Girl One in DEVILS DON'T FORGET

DEVILS DON'T FORGET meet the cast - Dennis Frymire

Dennis Frymire plays BUSTER in DEVILS DON'T FORGET

Dennis moved to Chicago back in 2006 to take funny classes at I.O. and Annoyance and the like. He only does the occasional two-person improv show now, but since moving to the Windy City, he's acted with Wildclaw Theater, LiveWire Chicago, WNEP, Hubris Productions, and has directed for Theatre Momentum. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Dennis is also studying clinical massage therapy at The Soma Institute, and will be a licensed therapist in early 2010. Dennis also has a website Carmi Neighborhood Watch.

If you think Dennis is a good looking guy, then you should definitely come see him in his underwear at DEVILS DON'T FORGET! (wink)

Random scratches from my notebook

I see a thousand dilettantes fighting over a dozen cups of coffee in a
cafe all the while trying to not spill of drop of the precious brown fluid
onto the clean white tiles that received such positive feedback in the
previous cafe talkback. I see people primping for a suitor that isn't
there. I see folks calling for others to become saints unwillingly devoid of
humility since they aren't willing to make martyrs of themselves. I see a
whole generation so used to using four letter words on a TV screen as
weapons that they don't know what it really means to physically feel pain.
Sympathy is all the rage, empathy is out of fashion. The older and uglier
I get, the more I understand the fleeting divinity of youth and soft skin.
Knowing that we have all come from heaven makes one wonder where else we
could be possibly going. No one steps in the same river twice right?

Rough Cut Fairy Tale Act 2 Scene 1

Act 2 Scene 1

(Birdy and Snailman)

Do you love me?

Yes

I want to hear you say it

I just did

Again, please

I love you.

Again

I love you. I love you. I love you!

How much

I love you thissssssss much

How much?

THhhhhhhhissss (closes his eyes)

I love you too!

Good

Kiss me

Where

Here

Alright

And here

Alright

Good

All this kissing is leading somewhere?

Absolutely...but

But what

But now that I'm all yours I want it to be special

Special how

Well I think...we need to clean the place up first

Why, we never had to clean it up before now

But back then we were just wild and crazy and living for the moment

That's what I thought we wanted

But, every once in a while once a girl has given herself over fully, she
wants ... she needs something special to remind her of how and why she got
hitched in the first place

Wait a minute who got hitched

We did

You think we got hitched?

We didn't

No we didn't

But I broke the shell

Yes

My sister. She's all laid up

Correct. And my seconds are still out there looking for her

I told you to leave her alone. we've done enough to her already

Don't tell me what to do. Don;t tell me my business

What are you suddenly so vicious?

Look I want you here. I want the good times, but you're taking this to
place I wont allow it to go

Huh

We are not hitched. We will never be hitched.

After everything I've done

Stop!

Hey!

Stop!

I never let anyone talk to me like that

You'll take it. I'll talk to you like this and you'll take it. Why are you
making me get this way? What are you doing to me? This was supposed to be
different! This was supposed to be fun!

It's not! It's not fun anymore!

Shut up

You shut up

(She lunges at him. He pushes her down and sticks his fingers into her
mouth)

Shut up. Take this and shut up!

(She is drugged and passed out)

Load In Begins for DEVILS DON'T FORGET

Well, we are about to load in this weekend for DEVILS DONT FORGET. It seems that we just started rehearsals yesterday (I know that everybody always feels that way at this point, but still I can't escape truisms).

Lights, Sound, Set, costumes... they are all coming in during the next 2 weeks. I am already feeling the little sense of wanting to hold on to it before it is all over.

We've assembled a fantastic cast, and I hope to talk a little bit about them over the next 2 weeks leading to that first curtain.

It is my hope that all of you in the Chicago Storefront Community will consider coming out to see DEVILS DON'T FORGET. I think we've got something very special here... oh and it runs for 4 weeks only!

Please consider subscribing to our blog themammals.blogspot.com or joining as a fan at our facebook page (just goto facebook and type in "Chicago Mammals").

All the best

FavoriteThing(s)ThisWeek - The Side Project

Last night we had our dry tech for Side Project's Cut to the Quick. Wednesday of this week was our last rehearsal of Torture Chamber, one of the pieces for the Atoms Smasher program.

First off, let me take a moment to say I've got a great cast of folks for this show. Brett Lee, Kipp Moorman, and Roxanne Saylor... this was my first time directing each of these folks, and I hope that I get to work with each one of them again soon and often. I'm so proud of the piece that they have created. With just a little time and a lot of dedication they are doing some excellent work. It is a joy to work with folks like these actors! Nuff said about these three top drawer talents!

I also have to say that the folks at the Side Project, Adam and Jeremy and the teams they have essembled, are doing a great job. They have produced these Cut to the Quick festivals before and it shows. Everything is coming together and I think we are going to have a magnificent little festival here.

My first experience with Side Project was as an audience member. I saw their production of FASTER last year, a play that I had read, enjoyed, and was looking forward to seeing. They did a fantastic job!. Between that and the experience of Cut to the Quick, I got to say I want to work more with Side Project. Major kudos.

Atom Smashers opens on April 19th. Go see it! And then make sure to catch the other programs as well. Lots of great programming this month at the Side Project.
